Tommy’s Weather : Monday

The first weekend of the New Year was pretty nice with fairly mild days and cool nights. Skiing was fantastic on the mountains and down in the valley it was pleasant enough for the Blue Heron above to take a break on this dock out in Roseland. Thanks to Heidi Crandall for sending that one our way. Nice shot!
Threats of showers and even clouds held off all day Sunday, with fog and drizzle rolling in after midnight. Monday will be a relatively cloudy day, but we’ll have a fair amount of sunshine in the mix too, in particular for the afternoon. Don’t get accustomed to it though.
A rather complex storm system is shaping up to affect our weather beginning as early as late Monday night into Tuesday. This is a tricky one folks and temperatures will be right on the edge of creating some real icing problems. Forecasters are not certain which way this will go as far as the type of precipitation. The best thinking right now, is that it starts as freezing rain and sleet in the wee morning hours Tuesday continuing into the day, but eventually changing back to rain. The fly in the ointment for that may be a wedge of cold air right up on the BRP that keeps Nelson and the east sections of the Blue Ridge in the cold air. If so, the icing could last well into Tuesday creating some real problems.
Forecasters at NWS Sterling discuss this in their Sunday evening synopsis:
“storm system late Monday night through Wednesday will provide for some
complicated forecasting yet again with over running air bringing
precipitation into cold low level air. Currently expect that to start as
sleet and snowflakes…then move rather quickly to freezing rain.
Freezing rain will turn to rain from S and southeast to the colder northwest. As
usual areas around hgr and cbe should be the last to phase over to
regular rain. Certainly bears watching as an icing threat.”
This system should be watched closely Monday & Monday night for any changes, but it possesses the potential to be a significant icing event, in particular up in the mountains on Tuesday. Hopefully temps will be warm enough to prevent that, but we’ll have to watch it and see.
The rest of the week is pretty seasonal with a mixed bag of precipitation through Wednesday night, then a chance for showers on Saturday.
No ultra cold weather is headed our way for the next several days, but certainly chilly for afternoon highs and cold nights.
