Nelson County, Virginia
They didn’t last long, but they sure packed a punch! A rapidly moving line of severe thunderstorms marched through the northern most portion of Nelson County Thursday afternoon. Much of Central Virginia was under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for most of the afternoon.

As the storms moved east into the Schuyler area, numerous trees and power lines were knocked down from the strong winds. Rescue and electric crews were in the area for hours checking the damage. Some minor wind damage was also reported near Roseland when a separate storm moved through that area. As of late Thursday evening, almost every CVEC customer had their power restored, while many AEP customers in Nelson were still without power.

Most areas received less than an inch of rain in the storms. The most rainfall received was on Afton Mountain with 1.07″ of rain with the next highest amount of .92″ over at Rockfish. Here at NCL in Greenfield we got just under 1/3 of an inch of rain at .29″ Down the road a bit at Devils Backbone Brewing our NCL gauge there had .51″ if rain in the gauge. Travel 3500 feet up to our NCL station at The Wintergreen Nature Foundation and the reading there was .57″ of rain.

Friday will be a much better day with milder temps and much lower humidity levels combined with a nice northerly breeze. By the weekend chances for scattered thunderstorms comes back around with valley temps in the 80’s, mountains in the 70’s.

Enjoy!

Beech Grove/Roseland
For several weeks now crews have been working to complete the latest addition to the nTelos Wireless network in Nelson County. The latest site in Beech Grove near the intersection of 664 & 151 should be completed and active soon. nTelos has been on an aggressive plan to add additional sites to the already established ones.

The most recent site was put up in February 2009 along Route 151 just across from the Rockfish Presbyterian Church. Two additional sites are on the mountain at Wintergreen, one overlooking the Rockfish Valley, another on Devils Knob. Other sites are already scattered across other portions of the county.

The new Beech Grove location will provide regular cellular service in additon to enhanced data services for aircards and smartphones.

A little over a year ago we told you about the opening of The Java Depot. Sadly today, we tell you about it’s closing. Owners Richard Boyd and Nancy Kern are calling it quits. The old reassembled Arrington Depot has housed two breakfast style restaurants to date. Sparrows Cafe was the first to occupy the building, opening in May of 2008. Less than a year later they closed. The 1870’s depot was moved from Arrington and reassembled in December 2007 by property owner Steve Crandall.

People packed Java Depot Sunday evening to bid farewell to Nancy and Richard after a little more than a year operating the restaurant.

“It’s been a great and fun ride,” Richard told us Sunday evening. “Though I will miss the people coming by, it will be nice to sleep in a bit,” he laughs. Nancy and Richard are actively seeking a buyer for the restaurant, hoping they will actually be able to return as customers in the near future.

Editor’s Note:
“Nancy & Richard, we thank you both for putting your heart and soul in this business. We thank you for the special attention you gave helping out with Junior Publisher, Adam, all of these months, day in day out. We will miss seeing you, but hope you get to return as customers soon!. Best wishes!” NCL.

Nelson County, Virginia
After a hot day Tuesday, don’t look for much relief in the near future. Temps today will be in the lower 90’s rising to the mid and upper 90’s for the remainder of the week into the weekend. Scattered thunderstorms provided some relief Tuesday afternoon, but most stations received less than 1/10 of an inch of rain. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for part of the afternoon but was canceled before its 8PM expiration time.

Cooler temps are on the way by next week with afternoon highs in the mid 80’s, but lots of heat between now and then!

Photo By Tommy Stafford : ©2010 www.nelsoncountylife.com : Thunderstorms begin developing Sunday afternoon over the Bllue Ridge Parkway in Nelson County, Virginia

Nelson County, Virginia
The string of hot weather will continue for most of this week right into the extended outlook. Though we may be talking upper 80’s to lower 90’s instead of blistering mid and upper 90’s. The humidity will hang in there, in particular on Monday until a series of expected thunderstorm development will cool things a bit, and after the passage lower humidity levels just a bit.

Monday looks to be the better chance for widespread thunderstorms at just about anytime, but afternoon again will be the better chances.

Very heavy thunderstorms moved through southern Nelson County Sunday afternoon dropping rainfall at the rate of an inch an hour and blowing down limbs near and east of Roseland. Click to enlarge.

The remainder of the week still has a slight chance of afternoon thunderstorms with afternoon highs near or slightly above 90 degrees.
