It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the Nelson County High School Govs football team. They lost this past Friday on their home field in Lovingston by a score of 34-13 to Lunenburg Central High School. Last week they were defeated by William Monroe High 34-6.

Our NCL Mountain Photographer, Paul Purpura, came down down to grab this past Friday night’s shots in the new Animoto slide presentation above. Very neat Paul! Paul says the evening did have some good moments in spite of the big loss. “Tyler Vest scored Nelson’s first touchdown of the evening. (The sequence of this running play is on the Animoto above.) It was about an 80 yard run. It was spectacular!”

In spite of the team effort, it wasn’t enough to pull out a win.

Next week The Govs will play The Riverheads here in Nelson.

With the enthusiastic support of the members in attendance at their 56th annual meeting on May 25, UVA Community Credit Union presented a tuition scholarship of $1,500 to Macon Rowley, a senior at Nelson County High School. She is one of 11 students to receive the award.

“We consider these scholarships an investment in the future of these young people and in their communities,” said Jeffrey Moscicki, the chair of the credit union Board of Directors. UVA Community Credit Union is one of the oldest financial institutions in our area, and its mission is to improve the well-being of our members and to strengthen the communities in which they live. Talk about bringing the house down! That’s what the NCHS drama students did Saturday night in the musical Hairspray! It was one of several performances the team has put on in the past couple of days. NCL’s East Nelson Photographer, Victoria Mininger, was there to grab a few shots. She said the performance by the NCHS students was nothing short of “awesome!” That comes with some authority as Victoria did several years of theater directing herself before Nelson.

Hairspray is a musical with music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. The songs include 1960s-style dance music and “downtown” rhythm and blues. In 1962 Baltimore, Maryland, plump teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Deane Show.[1] When Tracy wins a role on the show, she becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to integrate the show. Hairspray is a social commentary on the injustices of parts of American society in the 1960s.

You may recall, it was just back in December 2010 when we told you about the drama team at Nelson winning the state championship for the second year in a row.

Sheriff Brooks tells us emergency crews and officers are following standard procedure for such a threat, no reason to become overly concerned at this point. Students are safe. Situation under control.

NCL has confirmed that authorities are working a bomb threat Wednesday morning at Nelson County High School in Lovingston. “We have officers on the scene and other emergency support crews,” Nelson Sheriff, David Brooks confirmed to NCL.

As of this post authorities have no reason to believe this threat to be any more credible than others in the past.

We told you about Nelson’s wonderful win against Chatham High this past Friday night in Lovingston. It was the Govs first and much needed win (42-20) of the season! The homecoming game was also a time to honor and recognize the high school’s royalty.

The Friday night win against Chatham was a perfect backdrop for the 2010 Homecoming.

This past Thursday afternoon, October 7th, GRASP (Great Aspirations Scholarship Program) officially kicked off their program in the Nelson County High School. GRASP is a collaborative educational opportunity along with the Community Foundation Central Blue Ridge. GRASP is a non-profit organization specializing in helping students and their families, regardless of financial resources, to develop an educational plan for after high school. GRASP’s professional financial aid counselors work in high schools and private settings, without charge to students and families, to assist in overcoming financial and motivational challenges to the goal of higher education.

Wintergreen Real Estate Company in Nellysford is a sponsor of the initiative in Nelson County High School.

“The opportunity for students in Nelson County to have an extra resource to help them seek funding for college or trade school is huge. With the current economic climate and the rising costs of higher education, it is clear that local students can benefit from leveraged financial aid assistance so that they may pursue educational opportunities beyond high school,” says Becky Kohler, President and CEO of the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge.

A reception was held this past Thursday night at WREC in Nellysford to officially announce the kickoff in Nelson County High School.

GRASP strives to provide every high school student with an equal opportunity for continuing education, regardless of financial or social circumstances. Founded in 1983 by Virginia State Senator Walker Stosch and Dr. Raymond Garguilo, it helps students develop educational plans for after high school by placing a financial aid advisor in local schools to work alongside school staff to leverage financial aid opportunities for colleges and trade schools.

In 2009, each dollar invested in GRASP’s in-school advisor program leveraged $114 in financial aid for GRASP students, amounting to $31.3 million in financial aid and scholarships.

After a tough season so far with few wins, the Nelson County High Govs took it home with a win Friday night against William Campbell. The final score was 18-14.

Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks tells NCL as of 2:15 PM EDT that nothing was found at the school and all classes have returned to normal.

Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks confirmed by telephone around noon Wednesday that students at Nelson County High School have been evacuated due to a written threat of a bomb at the school. As a matter of protocol, authorities have evacuated the school and are performing a search. A staging area has been set up around the school by law enforcement and rescue personnel.

This is not the first time the schools have been evacuated for such threats. The most recent was last year on May 7th, and another back in September of 2007 .

There wasn’t a single seat left to to sit in, or corner left to stand in at Thursday night’s remembrance of the 40 year anniversary of Hurricane Camille held at Nelson County High School. A slide presentation was followed by a program including music, recognition of the Nelson County flood victims, and personal survival stories

People that could not fit into the auditorium filled seats in the nearby cafeteria.

Others sat on the stage behind the speakers to be able to listen. Numerous people were turned away from the Thursday night program because every seat and corner possible had been taken.

Folks attending Thursday night’s program got the chance to talk one on one with the participants after the presentation.

As hard as they tried, The Nelson County High Govs just couldn’t pull out another win Wednesday night against George Mason High from Fairfax, Virginia. The game ended with a score of 2-0 here at home. Earlier in the week The Govs beat Buckingham in Region B Tournament Play.

Tonight’s a big night in Nelson County Soccer! We told you about their 5-0 win against Buckingham on Memorial Day. Tonight at 6PM they will square off against George Mason High in Regional Tournament Play.

Parent’s have been emailng and posting about this one folks. GM is a big rival! “IF WE WIN THIS GAME, WE GO TO THE STATE TOURNEY FOR ONLY THE SECOND TIME EVER!!! COME OUT AND CHEER ON THE TEAM, AS THEY ATTEMPT TO MAKE HISTORY. The game will be played rain or shine. BRING NOISE MAKERS AND LOTS OF ENTHIUSIASM! Let’s show those folks from northern VA what Nelson County has to offer. Go Govs!” Jace Goodling commented earlier on our NCL website. His son, Clarke Goodling, was named Dogwood District All-District Player of the Year.

Sounds like this is going to a one very serious game tonight!
