Most of you know by now that Yvette and I are expecting a child in the fall of this year. Yea, she’s been drinking the milk lots to keep up the calcium! She’s always liked Homestead Creamery milk. You know, it comes in those classic glass bottles, not far off of the kind the milkman used to deliver in simpler times. Most of the stores around here carried it, then one day she walked in and no more! Gone.

Folks this is one popular brand of milk and it’s the best around. No artificial hormones, and about as close to the cow as it comes! Yea, move over happy steer, we’ve got the happy cow now! As soon as Ken and Yvonne Harris up at a.m. Fog heard about this they jumped all over it! And, yep! They have the whole line of Homestead Creamery milk products in the familiar glass bottles, right there in their market on the Nelson-Albemarle County line on Route 151.

Nothing’s quite as good as a cold glass of milk from one of those chilled bottles!

And now you can get Homestead Creamery milk just up the road at a.m. Fog. along with all of your vegetables, plants and nursery needs to boot!

A quick thanks to Ann Strober of Nellysford for the great shot of the fog in the Rockfish Valley this week. We’ve had several mornings of fog as the nighttime air becomes damp and allows it to form in the valley.

As we have talked about before, lots of our weather data goes through a a weather server called www.wunderground.com up in Michigan. It links all of the data our NCL-Weathernet stations gather and then puts it on the internet where it can be seen. Yesterday their servers took a major hit, it appears to be a hacker attack at this point, and as of late last night they still weren’t back up. So … we can’t get to most of our data and many of the maps we use here on the site. Some maps and temperature readings will be missing until this is resolved.

Thankfully we won’t be needing it for a few more days, the forecast is basically sunny and warm, hot even, with chances for rain by the weekend.

Until all of this is sorted out, here is the generic NWS forecast. Hopefully we will have all of this working by Thursday.

Here is an update we were mailed from WU this morning:

Reply-To: @wunderground.com

Hello,

Weather Underground is currently experiencing a problem with name
resolution (DNS) to the site. Roughly half of site visitors are taken
to a “Site Under Construction” or an error page when they try
wunderground.com.

We are working feverishly to solve this problem.

In the meantime, you can visit www.weatherunderground.com which still
works.

Sincerely,
Weather Underground Staff
Thanks for supporting Weather Underground!

Weather Underground, Inc.

http://www.wunderground.com/

It does appear that some of their dns issues are starting to clear up. However, our NCL-Weathernet Station here that reports to them is still unable to get info sent to them. Some of our other outlying stations are able to report.

We’ll keep you updated, but expect much of our problems on this end to be resolved later tonight.

Over the past hour or so we have noticed that Weather Underground (www.wunderground.com) which interfaces with our NCL Weathernet stations to bring you conditions across the area, has gone down. It appears they have a major outage. This will limit our ability to get our information to you from our weather stations and from any maps that are provided from wunderground.com.

We have made an inquiry to their technical support department, but as of this post, we have no word on the problem.

Again, it appears they have had a major outage of some kind.

Local Story By Tommy Stafford
Nelson County Life Magazine ©2008
Nelson County, Virginia

This past week the terms of a buyout of Alltel by Verizon Wireless have been revealed. VW will buy Alltel for 28.1 Billion Dollars. This should be good news for folks living in Nelson County, Virginia because it will eventually enhance cellular service here, and, make broadband wireless internet services available to a wide range of subscribers in the future. The only option thus far is expensive satellite internet or dialup service outside of the relatively small DSL or cable service areas. Neither satellite or dialup are very attractive choices.

Verizon Wireless has been quietly working out long term land leases in Nelson over the past year with many of them already approved. Within the past month three such sites have been given the nod by the Nelson County Planning Commission as indicated in the minutes recorded by Rural Nelson. Current Alltel sites already in Nelson, will eventually become part of the VW system. Right now the local Verizon Wireless territory reaches the top of Afton Mountain at I-64 and US 250 and on the western slopes of Devil’s Knob Mountain at Wintergreen. Currently Verizon users are on the Alltel extended network for much of the rest of Nelson. Eventually that will become local territory for both Alltel and VW customers.

You can read much more about the merger details in the story below.

Original Story posted: June 9, 2008 – 12:18 pm EDT

Verizon Wireless’s purchase of Alltel Communication L.L.C. is leaving many gasping for breath. The $28.1 billion purchase of the nation’s fifth-largest U.S. mobile operator seems to make sense for Verizon Wireless, both strategically and financially. However, for the private-equity investors who purchased Alltel less than a year ago, the payoff isn’t as sweet. TPG Capital and GS Capital Partners purchased Alltel for $27.5 billion last November. Verizon Wireless has become some what of the Goldilocks in this ongoing purchase of Alltel. Verizon Wireless has wanted to purchase the carrier for sometime, saying no the first time and no the second time (the same time that TBG and GS did go through with the purchase). But the third time, the price was juuusst right.

Verizon Communications Inc. CEO Ivan Seidenberg said during a conference call that he had approached Alltel in April regarding a possible deal and that negotiations turned serious a few weeks ago.

When and if the deal closes, Verizon Wireless will end up paying $5.9 billion in equity for Alltel, leaving TPG Capital and GS Capital Partners with around a $1 billion profit. Yes, it is a billion dollars, but it’s much lower than the normal profit equity firms receive in these deals. It basically boils down to the equity investors making little or no more than what they paid for Alltel last year.

Seidenberg said the price was similar to what the Verizon was willing to offer for Alltel last year prior to being acquired by private equity, but with the benefit of Alltel having grown its business over the past months.

Where to roam

And equity investors might not be the only group left financially frustrated because of this purchase. Verizon’s purchase of Alltel breeds a huge list of potential problems for the other big carriers with roaming issues near the top of the list. The nation’s four largest operators as well as a number of small carriers rely on Alltel to fill out their footprints and had established partnerships for roaming across what Alltel proclaimed was the largest geographical network in the country.

Now that Verizon Wireless is in control of those areas, the big question is whether Verizon Wireless will be forced to sell off some of that spectrum or if Verizon Wireless’ competitors will have to pay more in roaming charges.

Alltel acquired an established GSM roaming network when it acquired Western Wireless Corp. specifically to serve the needs of AT&T Mobility and T-Mobile USA Inc., so now those carriers may have to pay substantial roaming charges to Verizon Wireless.

Alltel noted in a recent Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it’s currently operating under a reciprocal roaming agreement with Verizon Wireless that is set to expire in 2010; and that it signed a 10-year roaming agreement in 2006 with Sprint Nextel Corp. and extended its GSM roaming agreement with AT&T Mobility through 2012.

Spectrum sale

Ken Hyers, senior analyst at Technology Business Research Inc., foresees Verizon Wireless being forced to sell spectrum in those overlapping areas.

“What it’s going to come down to is where exactly those markets are as to who will purchase them,” Hyers said.

Hyers said he sees AT&T Mobility as a viable candidate, but believes purchasing certain secondary markets would be a smarter move for T-Mobile USA in its continuing efforts to increase its network reach.

Hyers said a big reason for this purchase is a trend lately for carriers to gain savings through reducing roaming costs and obviously now, Verizon Wireless will rarely rely on other carriers for roaming.

Keith Mallinson, founder of Wise Harbor, agrees Verizon Wireless will be putting some spectrum up for sale in order to make sure everything remains on the up and up in the world of roaming.

“When [a carrier] is dominant in a certain region it becomes the monopoly of wholesale supply for roaming and it might be deemed that they could abuse that position,” Mallinson said.

Price plan tweaks

Verizon Wireless will also have to decide what to do with Alltel’s pricing plans. While the carriers’ current offerings are close enough to require only minor tweaking, Alltel’s MyCircle plans could prove a challenge. Alltel has noted the great customer response to the plans that allow customers to make unlimited calls to off-network numbers without incurring additional charges, and have proven a competitive response to the greater leverage larger carriers have with their own on-network options spread across larger customer bases.

Avi Greengart from Current Analysis said he thinks the MyCircle option will likely be a casualty of the deal.

The latest severe weather outlook area.

Conditions are developing across Central Virginia that are favorable for possible severe weather later today. Though not a sure bet at this time, dynamics are beginning to line up for at least some organized severe weather this afternoon.

By early Saturday morning, as you can see in the widget to the left, a tornado watch was already in place not too far away in portions of OH, WV, MD, and SW PA. And now much of the northern 1/3 of Virginia as of 12 noon EDT, continuing until 5PM.. This is part of the same system that may affect Nelson later today.

In the morning NWS hazardous weather outlook, the risk is defined:

DAY ONE…TODAY AND TONIGHT

A TORNADO WATCH IS IN EFFECT ACROSS THE PANHANDLE OF WEST
VIRGINIA…MARYLAND WEST OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND MOST OF
NORTHERN VIRGINIA THROUGH 5 PM. AUGUSTA…NELSON AND ALBEMARLE
COUNTIES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THE TORNADO WATCH.

THE REMNANTS OF THE THUNDERSTORM COMPLEX WILL MOSTLY AFFECT
WESTERN MARYLAND…THE PANHANDLE OF WEST VIRGINIA AND THE
METROPOLITAN AREAS OF BALTIMORE AND WASHINGTON DC BEFORE NOON.
HOWEVER…ADDITIONAL STORMS ARE ANTICIPATED THIS AFTERNOON AHEAD
OF THE APPROACHING COLD FRONT FOR THE ENTIRE AREA THROUGH 5 PM.
SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING WIND GUSTS OF 60
MPH OR GREATER AND LARGE HAIL. AN ISOLATED TORNADO IS ALSO
POSSIBLE.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY

ISOLATED TO SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ARE POSSIBLE SUNDAY AFTERNOON
AND EVENING. LOCALLY GUSTY WINDS AND SMALL HAIL WILL BE POSSIBLE
IN THE STRONGER STORMS.

Again this isn’t a sure bet that we’ll see anything, but does warrant keeping an eye out throughout the day for severe weather.

We’ll be updating here often if severe weather becomes a threat. And you can always get the latest information updated automatically on the left side of your screen in the weather widgets and RSS feeds.

The new farm market at a.m. Fog in Afton.

My childhood days were filled with memories of hot summer afternoons on the farm. Now back there it was cotton fields for as far as the eye could see. Down near the Mississippi River the sun would set over a distant barge pushing his way down to New Orleans. But the thing I remember most were those family farms, mom and pop types selling their vegetables along side the road.

Ken and Yvonne Harris at a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line along Route 151 in Afton capture that kind of feel.

No you won’t see a tug headed down the Missip, but the family farm feel is there alive and well. Right now they have 6 kinds of lettuce. spinach, kale, brocoli, cabbage and veggie start. 26 types of heirloom tomatoes are on the way, plus sweet peppers, and a big selection of HOT peppers!

Just liste to some of what you can get now; asparagus, lettuce, cucumbers, STRAWBERRIES, strawberry onions (the best!!!), roasting potatoes, Idaho potatoes, carrots, green peppers, farm eggs, meat, and fresh baked bread.

And yea, not to worry, some on fellow, they still have my favorite the trusty:
-Local “Happy Steer” Hormone and Antibiotic Free Meat
-Local Hormone & Antibiotic Free Chicken

Not to mention all of the other vegetables, annual, and perennial plants along with fruit trees ready for the spring planting season.

Have you seen that beautiful farm market? It’s OPEN FOR BUSINESS NOW, and before long stop in for hot teas, coffee, muffins, and bread while you take a look around, that could take while, there’s lots to see!

Visit them on the web at www.amfog.net or call them at 540-456-7100.

As talked about earlier, I am on the road this week in Tenneseee and while the first part of my trip has been near internet access, the last couple of days won’t. So, I am providing links down below to the generic forecasts for the mountain and valley. Don’t hang your hat on these, but they will give you a general idea of what the weather holds for the next several days.

Generally speaking, thunderstorms develop Thursday afternoon and continue through Friday afternoon. Skies become mostly sunny Saturday with temps in the mid 70′s. By Sunday showers are back in the forecast by Sunday.

We’ll be back in the saddle with regular weather and the audio starting Monday morning!

Don’t you just love it when you see folks doing something good…No I mean really good. moving some place, taking a leap of faith, and doing in their heart what they know’s right. That’s Ken and Yvonne Harris. They’ve made Afton and the Rockfish Valley their home. Heck, they’re already raising the next generation of Harris’ now. Farming and farming right is the way they do things.

At a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle County Line along Route 151 in Afton. They’re as close to the farm as you can get with plenty of fresh meats and vegetables.

They tell me right now they have veggie start, 6 kinds of lettuce. spinach, kale, brocoli, cabbage. And soon they’ll have 26 types of heirloom tomatoes, sweet peppers, and a big selection of HOT HOT HOT HOT, did I say HOT, YIKES! peppers!

This past weekend turned out to be a great one in spite of some rain showers that moved in Saturday night. Mainly the southern portion of Nelson saw rainfall, everyone else stayed pretty dry. A perfect weekend to be out and enjoy the weather.

I am traveling this week, so the weathercast will be abbreviated until next week when we will resume the normal audio cast. I will be watching the weather closely while traveling, and will do updates remotely over the course of the week when possible.

For the coming week we start off the week mild and dry with temps in the 70′s valley slightly cooler above. Rain is in the forecast by Wednesday night.

Thanks to Betsy Smith of Roseland for dropping these photos our way. Girl Scout Troop # 249 got a real treat this past weekend on a trip to Washington.

Betsy tells us:

“The girls went on a special trip to DC for the weekend that started out with a visit at the National Zoo. While there, they were given a “back door” view of the invertebrate exhibit where they watched coddle fish, an octopus and spiders being fed. They also held sea creatures such as star fish, needle star fish and horseshoe crabs. That evening they enjoyed watching the fireworks over DC as part of the Cherry Blossom Festival. The next morning they visited the Arlington Cemetery and watched the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier – very moving. They then headed into DC on the metro rail. This commuter system fascinated the girls – they learned quickly how to get on the “right” train and how to navigate the system, especially entering and exiting the metro stations! The metro trip ended at the Smithsonian where the girls visited the Museum of Natural History and the Air and Space Museum.

A very educational and fun trip for all!”

Ok the good news and the not so good news. First the good news! Our NCL Weathernet Station is back online and reporting from the Rockfish Valley again (see the upper left of your screen) I replaced and installed the new hard drive last night. The bad news, it was late, very late finishing up, leaving little time for custom weather, therefore you’ll be left with a generic forecast for today.

Generally speaking it will be a warmer day with light showers in the morning with better chances of rain in the afternoon, with scattered thundershowers. More info later on.

Today’s weather and audiocast is brought to you exclusively by:

There’s something about early Spring. You begin seeing hints of green, and then wham, snowflakes! Where did they come from. That’s part of the ritual in moving from Winter to warmer weather. It can’t really decide what it wants to do. But there’s one decision you don’t have to fret over, that’s stopping in at Ken & Yvonne Harris’ a.m. Fog on the Nelson-Albemarle Line along Route 151. They are as close to the farm as you can get!

Right now while Spring is still trying to make up it’s mind, they’ve already got; Asparagus, Lettuce, Cucumbers, STRAWBERRIES, strawberry onions (the best!!!), roasting potatoes, Idaho potatoes, carrots, green peppers, farm eggs, meat, & fresh baked bread.

And yea, they still have my favorite the trusty:
Local “Happy Steer” Hormone and Antibiotic Free Meat
-Local Hormone & Antibiotic Free Chicken

Not to mention all of the other vegetables, annual, and perennial plants along with lots of fruit trees ready for the spring planting! Spring is here!

And have you seen that new beautiful farm market going up, they ARE OPEN FOR BUSINESS NOW, and soon they’ll be featuring hot teas, coffee, muffins, and bread.

Visit them on the web at www.amfog.net or call them at 540-456-7100.

As we first told you back in early February a group from The Rockfish Presbyterian Church took part in an event to honor kids undergoing chemotherapy. ( who in the process lose their hair) This raises funds for cancer treatment and research, “Team Rockfish” had their heads shaved for Saturday night in Charlottesville.
We are working through St. Baldrick’s Foundation which began in 1999

Here, Nelson County Life’s Perfect Fit columnist and owner of Nelson Physical Therapy, Agnes Schrider, is about to lose her hair, all of it!

Thanks to Jamie Heard of the church who sent us the photos and was one of the participants. Jamie wrote in Sunday morning to say:

Our team, The Rockfish Knuckle Heads, raised $8,890. We were the first place team in fund raising. The overall event raised $66,527 for childhood cancer research.

Way to Go, that is nothing to sneeze at Jamie! Congrats to everyone for a terrific fund raiser!
