Train traffic is back to normal Thursday morning after a truck driving beside the tracks was hit around 6:30 AM. “We got the call about 6:38 AM for a train versus car accident off Cabell Road between Warminster and Fish Pond,” Wintergreen Fire & Rescue Chief Curtis Sheets told NCL. WF&R was called to assist other crews from Lovingston and Faber.

Apparently two vehicles, a white truck and a blue one, were being driven along side the tracks when the blue truck hit the train. “The people in both trucks got out without injury and fled the scene,” said Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks. As of 10:30 Thursday morning, the drivers were still at large and had not been located. Sheriff Brooks said the white truck involved had been reported stolen his office earlier in the morning.

The track stayed closed for about 4 hours until the scene was cleared and the investigation completed.

NCL has learned the young woman who lost her life in the auto accident is a freshman teen student at Nelson County High School. Out of respect for the family additional details from NCL will be released at a later time.

UPDATE 5:05 PM: Sheriff Brooks tells us the driver of the vehicle, a male, is alive. A male passenger in that vehicle is also alive. However, a female passenger in the vehicle has died. Our thoughts are with these families tonight.

Sheriff David Brooks has confirmed reports of a fatality involving a single vehicle on Rt. 6 (River Road) at Duncan Hollow Loop in Faber. It is not yet clear if the accident is on the east or west end of the loop. Though we are told traffic is flowing smoothly, expect delays once the wrecker arrives.

For the 2nd time is under two months a semi truck used to haul turkeys has jackknifed on Route 151 near Bland Wade Road. Wednesday’s accident now has the northbound lane shutdown with a little of the southbound lane passable in the vicinity of Afton Family Medicine.

In December’s blizzard a turkey truck cutting through Route 151 between I-64 and US 29 jackknifed blocking the road and stranding over 400 drivers for nearly 5 hours in sub freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall.

Emergency crews are working now to get the truck off of the road and back open to normal traffic.

Authorities are working a vehicle accident this Friday afternoon around 3PM on Virginia Route 151 in Afton near The Trading Post. That is just north of D’Ambolas Restaurant on 151. Part of the roadway is blocked while the scene is being worked.

Medics tend to the people involved in the accident.

It is not believed the accident resulted of any serious injuries.

We have very few details tonight, but have learned that an auto accident on Route U.S. 29 North at Plank Road (Crossroads) in Albemarle County has left one person dead according to news and witness accounts. The roadway was closed for about an hour and a half while authorities worked the accident. NCL received phone calls and text messages from people stuck in the traffic snarl as the accident was happening.

Authorities are on the scene of a motor vehicle accident on 29 North at the Nelson-Albemarle County Line. Police say no injuries have occurred but the wreckage is blocking the highway. Traffic is being diverted to Faber Road and Route 6 to relieve congestion. It is unclear at this time if it is north or southbound lanes. But travel in the area is discouraged until the scene is cleared.

Authorities say the accident is just over the line into Albemarle.

Unfortunately part of living in a rural county like Nelson is having to deal with agri accidents involving tractors. There’s lots of those here for sure! Within the past few days members of The Piney River Fire Department, Lovingston Fire, Wintergreen Fire, and Rockfish Fire got together to learn about how to best rescue someone pinned under a tractor after a rollover accident. Thanks to Wendie Wyant for sharing these pictures of the training session held at Wintergreen Fire Station 2 in Stoney Creek.

Wendie tells us come of the local participants were: Some of the participants are John Robles, Wendy McCarthy, Jim Truslow, Mike Barnett, John Rebert, Tony Reid, Cameron Lenahan, Chris Martin, Margie Rosenberry, Robbie Hubbard and Bruce Johnson.

In the fluorescent green shirts were instructors from Augusta County lending expertise.

The training session were held this past weekend on April 18th & 19th.

Traffic was tied up briefly on Tuesday afternoon as fire and rescue crews responded to an auto accident on Route 151 near Church of the Blue Ridge & Afton Christian Church School just inside Nelson County, Virginia.

Some witnesses at the scene said ti appeared the accident happened when a car was turning left from 151 and an approaching truck may have hit the car.

No major injuries were thought to have occurred in the accident and the roadway was cleared fairly quickly.

NCL Web Edition has confirmed a multiple a two person fatality auto accident is currently being worked on Route U.S. 29 Southbound just inside Nelson County, Virginia south of the Albermarle County Line. “As I understand it, this was a car that flipped over down an embankment and there are two fatalities. Another victim is being flown out by Pegasus,” Nelson County Sheriff, David Brooks told NCL just before noon Sunday. Brooks says information is very fluid right now and hard facts are few at the moment. The sheriff went on to say he believes the car has out of state tags in it and is not local. His officers in addition to Virginia State Police, (VSP) and other area agencies are on the scene at this hour.

A medical examiner has been called to the scene by VSP which confirms preliminary information that it is a fatal accident.

Authorities are investigating a weekend fatality that happened just before midnight Saturday in Wingina. That’s a few miles east of Lovingston and Shipman in Eastern Nelson County, Virginia. “The car apparently veered off of the road and hit a tree, then burst into flames,” Sheriff David Brooks tells NCL. A body was found inside the car after the blaze was extinguished. The sheriff says the body was sent to Richmond for an autopsy and positive identification before the name is released to the public.

The exact cause of the accident is not known at this time.

The Accident Scene On Oak Ridge Road Just After 8 AM Friday Morning : NCSD Photo

As we first told you here early Friday morning, a Shipman man lost his life after a head-on collision along Oak Ridge Road in Eastern Nelson County, Virginia. In additional details released by Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks this afternoon, the victim is identified as 43-year-old Richard Evans of Shipman. It was originally thought the last name was Bivens for a short time.

“In the pick up were 3 juveniles from Schuyler, Virginia. At this point it looks like the pickup truck crossed the center lane. Injuries ranged from serious to minor,” Sheriff Brooks tells NCL.

The injured juveniles were taken to UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville.

As news of the accident spread, people who knew the victims began expressing their condolences online. The following was a comment submitted in an earlier post:

This is really a shock for us students at Nelson County High School. Some of us knew them and some of us respected them greatly. We hope that the one in critical condition pulls a miracle for us all. This is an extreme heartache for those who knew Mr. Evans. We are in sympathy of this horrible accident. It happened so fast! It shows how precious life is. WE wish luck to those who are hurting and praying right now. You’re in our thoughts….Forever. Hold onto your loved ones to get through this experience. God is with you and watching over you. Bless the family that is going through this and all who loved him. Bless his children, His wife, and his friends for this tragedy.

We are willing to do whatever it takes to help. Praying for good news! And bless the EMT’s and the police for doing whatever it took to take care of this.. your in our hearts. A great deal of stress im sure was put on these life-savers of nelson county so. bless you and god is with you, too. For the strong ones who ” clean up the mess… when there is one” You’re doing your job and what a great job it is.

Updated 12:30 PM EDT to correct last name of victim
The Nelson County Sheriffs department tells us 43-year-old Richard Bivens Evans of Shipman died in this morning’s wreck near Oak Ridge. Next of kin have been notified.

Three other people are being treated for injuries; one of them is in very critical condition.

NCL Web Edition is following the events at this hour concerning a head on collision in Eastern Nelson County, Virginia on Oak Ridge Road. Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks tells NCL that one person is confirmed dead at the accident scene and others are injured. They are currently being transported to area hospitals in Charlottesville. “The accident happened around 8 AM this morning. If you are familiar with where the entrance to Camp Jeep was last year, it’s very near that area,” says Sheriff Brooks.

The road in that area is shut down as rescue teams and law enforcement work the scene.
