For the 2nd time is under two months a semi truck used to haul turkeys has jackknifed on Route 151 near Bland Wade Road. Wednesday’s accident now has the northbound lane shutdown with a little of the southbound lane passable in the vicinity of Afton Family Medicine.

In December’s blizzard a turkey truck cutting through Route 151 between I-64 and US 29 jackknifed blocking the road and stranding over 400 drivers for nearly 5 hours in sub freezing temperatures and heavy snowfall.


Emergency crews are working now to get the truck off of the road and back open to normal traffic.

Authorities are working a vehicle accident this Friday afternoon around 3PM on Virginia Route 151 in Afton near The Trading Post. That is just north of D’Ambolas Restaurant on 151. Part of the roadway is blocked while the scene is being worked.


Medics tend to the people involved in the accident.

We have very few details tonight, but have learned that an auto accident on Route U.S. 29 North at Plank Road (Crossroads) in Albemarle County has left one person dead according to news and witness accounts. The roadway was closed for about an hour and a half while authorities worked the accident. NCL received phone calls and text messages from people stuck in the traffic snarl as the accident was happening.

Authorities are on the scene of a motor vehicle accident on 29 North at the Nelson-Albemarle County Line. Police say no injuries have occurred but the wreckage is blocking the highway. Traffic is being diverted to Faber Road and Route 6 to relieve congestion. It is unclear at this time if it is north or southbound lanes. But travel in the area is discouraged until the scene is cleared.


Authorities say the accident is just over the line into Albemarle.

A two car accident late Thursday night briefly shutdown Route 151 in Afton. The accident occurred in the vicinity of Tanbark Drive and Route 151. The scene was cleared in less than an hour.

Unfortunately part of living in a rural county like Nelson is having to deal with agri accidents involving tractors. There’s lots of those here for sure! Within the past few days members of The Piney River Fire Department, Lovingston Fire, Wintergreen Fire, and Rockfish Fire got together to learn about how to best rescue someone pinned under a tractor after a rollover accident. Thanks to Wendie Wyant for sharing these pictures of the training session held at Wintergreen Fire Station 2 in Stoney Creek.


Wendie tells us come of the local participants were: Some of the participants are John Robles, Wendy McCarthy, Jim Truslow, Mike Barnett, John Rebert, Tony Reid, Cameron Lenahan, Chris Martin, Margie Rosenberry, Robbie Hubbard and Bruce Johnson.

Traffic was tied up briefly on Tuesday afternoon as fire and rescue crews responded to an auto accident on Route 151 near Church of the Blue Ridge & Afton Christian Church School just inside Nelson County, Virginia.


Some witnesses at the scene said ti appeared the accident happened when a car was turning left from 151 and an approaching truck may have hit the car.

No major injuries were thought to have occurred in the accident and the roadway was cleared fairly quickly.

NCL Web Edition has confirmed a multiple a two person fatality auto accident is currently being worked on Route U.S. 29 Southbound just inside Nelson County, Virginia south of the Albermarle County Line. “As I understand it, this was a car that flipped over down an embankment and there are two fatalities. Another victim is being flown out by Pegasus,” Nelson County Sheriff, David Brooks told NCL just before noon Sunday. Brooks says information is very fluid right now and hard facts are few at the moment. The sheriff went on to say he believes the car has out of state tags in it and is not local. His officers in addition to Virginia State Police, (VSP) and other area agencies are on the scene at this hour.

A medical examiner has been called to the scene by VSP which confirms preliminary information that it is a fatal accident.
