Rita Dove is a former U.S. Poet Laureate and Consultant to the Library of Congress (1993-1995) and recipient of the 1987 Pulitzer Prize in poetry. Her most recent poetry collections are Sonata Mulattica (2009) and American Smooth (2004). She is Commonwealth Professor of English at the University of Virginia where she teaches creative writing. It is Sonata Mulattica that will be the focus of the afternoon because the book ties directly to the Festival’s Vienna theme. A booksigning will follow the reading, and copies of the book will be available for purchase.

Wintergreen Summer Music Festival – “Vienna Cafe 1900″ – an exhibition on loan from the Austrian Cultural Forum in Washington, DC. The exhibition is at the Old Wintergreen Country Store in Nellysford, Virginia. Free. Noon-3 pm

Visiting the cafés of Vienna during the early 1900s was a spectacular experience. The café was a luxurious haven of glittering mirrors, polished surfaces and attentive service. It is not surprising that they became a beloved part of the city. The exhibition offers a chance to explore the world of the Viennese café, from the exquisite design of the interiors to the activities of the people who met there. Old photographs, drawings and paintings are used to bring this corner of the past to life. The curator of the exhibition is Charlotte Ashby. www.wintergreenperformingarts.org

Wintergreen Summer Music Festival – Wienerwald Wanderweg/Vienna Woods Hiking Path. 1-3 pm. Many Festival patrons opted to amble along the Old Appalachian Trail in 2009. However, in 2010, we invite you to the enjoy WPA’s Wienerwald Wanderweg (Vienna Woods Hiking Path). The good news is that you don’t have to be able to say it in order to experience it! Maybe we should offer a prize to the person who can say it the fastest!

The Shamokin Springs Nature Preserve Loop is a very gentle walk that is only three-tenths of a mile long. Perfect for all ages, visitors can stroll at their own pace. Academy chamber ensembles will be stationed along the way playing Viennese music, a dancer from Bowen McCauley Dance will give three performances of Denn Armut ist ein grosser Glanz aus Ihnen by WSMF Composer-in-Residence Wolfgang Seierl and there will be readings of Austrian poetry in German and English.

Shamokin Springs Nature Preserve is located at the intersection of Blue Ridge Drive and Shamokin Springs Trail. There is a very small parking area for the Preserve, but attendees should plan to park along Blue Ridge Drive, Shamokin Springs Trail, Wood Lily Lane or Deerberry Lane. There will be signs at the entrance, as well as smiling faces to answer any questions. Free.

Iyengar (hatha) yoga class led by Shaaron Honeycutt in a beautiful, air conditioned(!), and spacious facility, right in “downtown” Nellysford at the Tuckahoe Club House.

This week classes on Saturday and Sunday, July 10th and 11th. Class begins at 9 a.m. and runs through to 10:30 a.m.
