Making Stuff at the Virginia Discovery Museum, from January 22 until February 5, 2011
The University of Virginia Department of Materials Science and Engineering will be at the Virginia Discovery Museum teaching visitors about Making Stuff, a series of demonstrations that show how scientists and engineers are using cutting edge technology to make new materials to improve our lives. Inspired by the NOVA documentary that airs on PBS beginning January 19, UVA students and Museum staff will lead visitors through various activities showing how Stronger, Smaller, Cleaner and Smarter materials are designed. The two-week event will kick off on January 22 with the day-long construction of a balloon model of a carbon nanotube to be displayed outside the Museum. Guests will also create ooblek, a Smarter material that is fun for the whole family. Children will also receive Secrets of a New World: The Right Materials, a book created by UVA students about materials science, while supplies last.
Pack grandma and the kids in the car, bring some snacks, and join us for Family Fun Days, where everyone in the family can create their own painting. Our artist will walk each guest step-by-step through creating the featured Artistic Abandon painting, Sea Turtle, while they munch on snacks, listen to music and chat with each other. Great for ages 6 and up. Reservations required.
