Minor 2.7 Earthquake Rattles Nelson & Parts Of Central Virginia : 11.26.09
Nelson County, Virginia
People in Nelson and other nearby parts of Central Virginia got a pre-Thanksgiving surprise Wednesday evening as a 2.7 magnitude minor earthquake shook parts of Southern and Eastern Nelson County and points to the south in Amherst and Appomattox.
The US Geological Survey shows the quake hitting at 5:24 PM eastern time with the center approximately 7 miles north of Appomattox.
“I felt it and I live in Gladstone..at the Nelson-Appomattox line!,” Heather Gowen wrote to us via our Nelson Mag Facebook page shortly after it happened. Jennifer Campbell Thomas also wrote to us on FB saying, “I’m in Arrington and we felt/heard it. It was loud and the whole house felt like it was vibrating.”
The Nelson Sheriff’s Department received lots of calls from people all over SE Nelson County reporting something similar to an explosion.
As of late Wednesday night, no damage or injuries had been reported.
No turkeys were harmed either! Whew!
