The shot above is from this past weekend’s performances at The Hamner Theater in the Rockfish Valley Community Center. Lots of bands came out and played to benefit Sk8 Nelson, a group trying to bring a real skate park to Nelson County. Be looking for more events and information on SK8 Nelson as they become more organized. And you can always visit The Hamner Theater website to see all of the upcoming acts there. A big thanks to Nancy over at the theater for grabbing this photo for us.

Also want to keep reminding you about the Crutchfield Electronics Recycling truck that will be at the RVCC a week from this coming Saturday on September 6th from 9 AM to 3 PM. That’s the same day as the pancake breakfast. For this one day only, Crutchfield is waiving the normal small fee for you to get rid of most any electronics. Nelson County Life, The RVCC & Crutchfield have all teamed up to bring the truck to Nelson for this one special day. They tell me pretty much anything with a corded plug qualifies! Click on the Crutchfield image on the upper left of your screen under the cover photo to learn more.

Can you believe we’re actually talking about rain for several days? Last night light rain began creeping into portions of the area, and today we should begin to see a nice soaking rain, the first in a couple months. Highs Tuesday never made it out of the 70’s in the valley and the 60’s on the mountains. That’s roughly 20 degrees cooler than Monday!

The rain won’t wipe out all of the dry weather we’ve had lately, but it will certainly put a dent in it. A frontal boundary teams up what’s left of TS Fay to provide us with some widespread rainfall across most of Virginia except for the far northern portions.

Because of the clouds and rain, look for very fall feeling temps again today with highs only in the mid & upper 60’s valley and around 65° on the mountains.

Some rain continues into early Labor Day weekend on Saturday, with gradually improving conditions by Saturday afternoon. The second half of the holiday look sunny & nice for now with pleasant temps in the low 80’s.

UPDATE: (10:00am) The missing girl was found this morning. She is said to be in good condition.

—–

Search teams in Nelson County are looking for a missing 17-year-old girl at Crabtree Falls.

Investigators say she was hiking with a group yesterday when she took a different path at the top of a mountain.

The Nelson County Sheriff’s office launched the search last night when the girl never returned from the hike.

The girl is described as a white female, 5′8″ and about 130 pounds. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, tennis shoes, and a blue short-sleeved shirt.

Contact the Nelson County Sheriff’s Department if you know anything that may help authorities find the girl.

Thank you again Ann Strober for the great sunset view from the BRP at Raven’s Roost. We’ve been highlighting lots of nice sunsets over the past few days, and this is another really great one, but with a few clouds on the horizon from an approaching cold front that’s moved through the area.

Most people missed the showers yesterday as they were confined to southern portions and to the NW. Some light rain fell but not enough to even measure. The bigger story, cool northerly winds that blew in overnight that will keep temps feeling like a prelude to fall today.

The cold front that moved through works back as a warm front over the next day combining with what’s left over from Tropical Storm Fay to increase chances for rain from Wednesday into the first half of the holiday weekend.

Temperatures stay in the mid to upper 70’s until the weekend when we get back into the lower 80’s.

Thanks to Jeff Stone over at Wintergreen Winery for today’s weather photo. This is another really great sunset, think this one is at Three Ridges. We’ve been having some spectacular ones lately, and appreciate Jeff sending this one our way!

The weather over the weekend was pretty much as forecast, warm and dry with no rain.

Today we’ll have chances for isolated afternoon thunderstorms as a cold front works through the area, passing to our south, stalling, then returning as a warm front later in the week. This keeps chances for thunderstorms in the forecast off and on starting Wednesday. If remnants of Fay make her way here, that will interact with the front giving us better chances for much needed rain.

We also continue to watch two other tropical disturbances out in the Atlantic for possible impact on U.S. weather by next weekend.

Temperatures remain pleasant in the upper 70’s to lower 80’s after today’s readings in the 90’s.

Thanks to Ann Strober for this weekend’s weather photo of the sun setting behind the mountains just outside of Nellysford. Ann has become quite the photo taker with her new Nikon!

Also, howdy to Ray Aston who listens every morning! Ray stopped me earlier this week and was wondering what was happening with our audio on Wednesday morning. Any of you with satellite internet know what problems it can be, we’re there! But thanks for listening every morning Ray!

And be sure to make it over to the Hamner Theater this weekend in the RVCC, for their event benefiting SK8 Nelson, that the bunch working to establish a skate park here. You can read the flier above for more info or click here for details.

Continue to remind you about the Crutchfield Electronics Recycling Truck that will be at the Rockfish Valley Community Center on Saturday September 6th from 9 AM to 3PM. Unfortunately, we don’t have any good prospects for rain this weekend. All indicators are showing Tropical Storm Fay hooking left and heading away from us in the next couple of days.

Our next, best chance for rain arrives Monday with a cold front that will eventually stall over the region keeping chances for rain in the forecast for most of the first part of next week.

For the immediate weekend ahead, look for partly to mostly sunny skies and dry conditions.

For the past several several days we’ve had those kinds of sunrises and sunsets Henri captured, as skies have stayed mostly clear with warm to hot days and mild nights. So far for the month of August we have only seen .18″ of rain here at the office n Greenfield, and other locations the same. You don’t need a weather guy to tell you that it’s become very, very dry lately.

Look for the dry weather to continue right on into the weekend. Showers return next week, hopefully, by Monday.

It was 39 years ago today that Nelson County was hit by devastating Hurricane Camille. Over a hundred people lost their lives statewide, dozens here in Nelson, in the category 5 hurricane that forever changed Nelson County. Yesterday, Peter Agelasto and others unveiled a historic marker just off Route 151 South of Spruce Creek on the banks of the Rockfish River near Elk Hill. (see accompanying story in current August issue of NCL page 41) It was at that very spot near the Rockfish River Bridge that Ed Ewing and his wife were killed in the raging flood waters coming down from the mountains. The marker is in addition to others in the county memorializing the event.

We certainly won’t see anything like Camille in our area today, and it still looks like Fay is not going to affect our weather. The present thinking is high pressure will keep the storm from making into Virginia, rather pushing it to our south and west. We’ll keep you posted if she heads this way.

Look for temperatures to moderate a bit for the rest of the week leaving behind the 90’s we’ve seen for the past two to three days. Chances for rain (excluding Fay if she moved this way) will reappear around Monday.
