William Layton’s Last Chance Pumpkin

Linus, your Great Pumpkin was grown in Nelson County.

William Layton of Tyro, the subject of our October 2007 cover story, broke the state record this weekend for the biggest pumpkin grown. At the Virginia State Fair in Richmond, “Last Chance” (shown above in the patch, prior to cutting) weighed in at 1138 pounds, breaking the old record by more than 200 pounds. The pumpkin on this month’s cover, Baby Huey, took home second place at 824 pounds. Media coverage here, here and here.

Congratulations William!
